PELION VILLAGES GUIDED TOURS / FALL 2020
1. “Pelion Sunset” (duration 3-4 hours)
Join our half-day tour to Portaria and Makrinitsa and experience a breathtaking moment as the sun goes down behind the harbor hills of Volos and the city lights begin to shimmer.
Our tour starts with a scenic drive to the cosmopolitan village of Portaria. During this time you will enjoy spectacular views to the Pagasitikos Bay and some of the most important archaeological sites of the area. Arriving at Portaria, we will visit the 16th century church of Panagia (Holy Mary) Portarea with its rare wall paintings and learn about the unique features of local domestic architecture by looking at some of the most distinctive mansions in the village. If you love mountain walks, we recommend that we add to our program the Trail of the Centaurs, a 30-minute moderate hike through Portaria’s lush forest.
After visiting Portaria, filled from the beauty of nature and the local architecture, we will drive to Makrinitsa, only 2 kilometers away, to marvel at one of the most beautiful sunsets you could ever imagine.
2. “Four Villages - Four Stories” (duration 4-5 hours)
Explore four beautiful Pelion villages during this half-day tour and learn about their unique history.
Our tour starts with a breathtaking drive to the mountain through beautiful olive groves perched on steep slopes. During this time you will enjoy spectacular views to the bay and the centuries-old tower houses that lay abandoned in the modern landscape.
Arriving at the first village you will meet the legend of the Little Pelion Train and marvel at the 18th century church of the Holy Archangels, before we head to our next village. Some of the most spectacular Pelion mansions are located at Vizitsa, where secular and religious life coexist so harmoniously with an operating monastery located just a few steps away from the main square of the village. After experiencing the hospitality of the local women and getting a taste of their local home-made products, we will head to Pinakates, an almost unspoiled village were electricity arrived in the mid-70s, and then to Agios Georgios which we like to call the "king of the Pelion villages".
At the end of our tour, as we descent down to the coastal road again and drive back to Volos, you will time to think which of the four villages became your favorite!
3. “Pelion Grand Tour” (duration 8-9 hours)
This is a highly customized and fully narrated tour packed with amazing lookouts, picturesque villages, and nature at its best, that introduces you to the grandiosity of Mount Pelion.
Entering the mountain from the east through the village of Milies where we have our first stop, we head to central and eastern Pelion to explore the villages of Tsagkarada with the thousand year old plane tree and Kissos with the spectacular church of Agia Marina. It will be time for a picnic lunch or a quick lunch at a local tavern.
When we get to the small village of Hania at the top of the mountain, you can breath in the cool mountain breeze, enjoy a cup of local mountain tea and buy Pelion honey choosing from a dozen different varieties and flavors, before we start our descent to Portaria on the west side of the mountain.
At the end of the day, you will be back in Volos with a brain full of new facts about Pelion and a bit of energy left from not having to navigate the Pelion roads yourself!
