The Unromantic Tour: Visiting Volos’ Industrial Past
"... We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us."
- Winston Churchill
This tour of Volos’ most iconic industrial buildings will unfold the modern history of the city in front of your eyes.
An important production center in the early 20th century, Volos possesses some 50 industrial units, factories and warehouses within its modern urban plan. During our tour, we will visit 10 of these industrial monuments and learn about their significance for the local society and economy, past and present. References to archaeology, architecture, and local traditions complete the picture of a region with thousands years of history. Wars, refugees, earthquakes, and incidents from the life of the factory workers will seduce you to a trip back in time. Our walk will end with a guided tour of the spectacular Rooftile and Brickworks Museum N. & S. Tsalapatas (PIOP).
This tour may not be romantic, but the stories of the buildings and their people will definitely touch your hearts.
