Velestino Guided Tour

You may have heard of Velestino (ancient Pheres) as the homeland of Rigas Pheraios-Velestinlis, a great thinker and pioneer of the Greek War of Independence. But the town has a much longer history and has even inspired Euripides to write one of his most famous, yet controversial plays, Alcestis, which takes place in Pheres. From Homer we also learn that Eumelos, king of Pheres and son of Alcestis, participated in the Trojan war with 11 ships.  

There are several important monuments to visit at Velestino that speak of its great past: the Mycenaean chamber tombs, the Hypereia Spring which according to Sophocles was so much loved by the Greek gods and the Doric temple of Thaulios Zeus.

This tour will allow you to appreciate an off-the-beaten path village as you explore and unfold the hidden layers of its glorious past.
